about

I’ve always thought writing music is like making sketches, each piece purposefully left unfinished, awaiting the contributions of others before it can be fully realized. The same piece might take countless forms, many iterations with different instrumentation, timing, changes - endless possibilities for improvisation within its structure. Finding the right group of musicians to play a particular piece or fragment has always been important to me, and I feel rewarded with new ideas and musical pathways when I can bring people I respect and admire together to make something fresh and different.

One thing I never really wanted to do, though, was play solo. But then the coronavirus quarantine happened. Rehearsal spaces closed. Collaboration stopped. I was on my own for the foreseeable future. So I decided to dig in a little more to some of the fragments that I had been playing a lot at the time. Instead of hearing other instruments elaborating on the themes in my head, I had to add the dynamics and the variations myself. The improvised sections became more fluid the more I played the pieces, and eventually I felt that they materialized as works for solo guitar.

At the beginning of June, I decided to record a concert from home presenting my newly reworked sketches for improvised guitar as a live recording. It was recorded straight through with no breaks, pauses, or edits, and it was intended to be published as one track, uninterrupted. But the file was too large to upload as a single track on Bandcamp. So I present it here as an 8-track suite, meant to be enjoyed in order, as if you were attending a concert in my home, sitting on the floor in the living room or leaning against a wall in the corner.
